Overview
Bharathiar University is a Tamil Nadu state university in Coimbatore, set up in 1982; its School of Distance Education began in 1991-92 and is now the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). It teaches postgraduate courses by distance, with books by post and contact classes, and has run UG and PG courses online since 2022-23.

Add a ₹150 application fee; exam fees are paid separately at exam time. Online MA and M.Com courses cost ₹44,880 in total (₹11,880, then ₹11,000 a semester). Payment is online only, by UPI, card or net banking.

How to apply
Portal: the university’s website. Spot admission is also possible at the CDOE in Coimbatore. Books are posted within a month of admission. The CDOE says it has not authorised any agency, franchise or private study centre for admission.

Any degree in any major, after 10+2 (or 11+1, or 10 plus a diploma).

MCA
Any degree with maths at +2, or a degree with a maths or statistics paper, a B.Com with business statistics, a B.Sc in computer science or IT, or a BCA.

MA History: any degree. MA English Literature: any degree with Part-II English. M.Com: a B.Com of any specialisation, BBA, BBM or a bank management degree.

Higher secondary (+2), pre-degree, senior secondary or a diploma in any subject.
Exams and study
Distance exams are held in May for the Academic Year batch and in December for the Calendar Year batch. You pick an exam centre when you apply for the exam, and centres may be outside Coimbatore.
Printed books are posted within a month of admission, and soft copies of all course material are on the CDOE portal as PDFs.
Contact classes are held in Coimbatore and at learner support centres. Online students sit exams twice a year from home, writing on A4 sheets and uploading one PDF.
UGC recognition. UGC-DEB’s 2026-27 lists recognise 12 of Bharathiar’s distance PG programmes up to July 2028 and the distance MBA and MCA only for sessions up to January 2027, with the B.Ed on the Category-I list. Eleven online programmes, including the MBA, MCA, B.Com, BBA and BA English, are on the online entitled list.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the Bharathiar distance MBA?
₹52,480 for two years: ₹13,780 in the first semester and ₹12,900 in each of the next three, plus a ₹150 application fee. Exam fees are paid separately at exam time.
Can I do a BA or B.Com by distance?
No. The CDOE’s distance courses are postgraduate only. The B.Com, BBA and BA English Literature are offered online, at ₹50,580 for three years.
Is the distance MBA recognised by UGC-DEB?
Yes, but UGC-DEB’s 2026-27 list covers it, and the distance MCA, only for sessions up to January 2027. Check the DEB list before joining a later session. The online MBA is on the online entitled list.
Is there an entrance test?
None is named. The MBA asks for any degree in any major.
When does the next admission open?
The CDOE says admissions for the next session will open shortly; no dates had been posted on 21 October 2026. It admits twice a year, in January and July.
If Bharathiar SDE isn’t the right fit
Bharathiar has no UG degrees by distance, and its contact classes centre on Coimbatore. IGNOU has distance and online options, and UGC-entitled private online MBAs start at ₹67,000 in total (Mangalayatan University, fee checked 17 October 2026).
