Overview

Rajiv Gandhi University, set up in 1984 at Rono Hills, Doimukh, near Itanagar, is a central university. Its Centre for Distance and Online Education, earlier the Institute of Distance Education, teaches seven MAs and BA (Hons) degrees by distance through 16 study centres in Arunachal Pradesh, with self-instructional study material and contact programmes.

Fees are from the course pages on the university’s website, which name no session. The MA fee is charged by semester and the totals are our sums. UGC-DEB also lists five four-year BA (Hons) programmes, but the CDOE’s BA page shows only an older three-year fee table, so no BA fee is given here; ask the CDOE. Learners whose qualifying exam was outside Arunachal Pradesh pay a ₹100 eligibility fee. The pages don’t say whether exam fees are included.

Admission ran online from 1 July to 15 September 2025, and confirmation pages had to reach study centres by 15 October 2025.
2026-27 session
The the university’s website portal carries a 2026-27 form, but the CDOE posted no admission notice or last date. UGC-DEB’s last date for the session was 13 October 2026.

Not announced yet (checked 23 October 2026). The CDOE’s latest admission notice, for 2025-26, opened admissions in July.

How to apply

1Create a DEB ID on deb.ugc.ac.in and an ABC ID, and scan your ID, photo, signature, Class X and XII certificates and, for the MA, your graduation mark sheet and certificate in one PDF

2On the university’s website choose New Admission, enter your DEB ID and fill in the form, picking your course, semester, study centre and examination centre

3Pay the fee shown on the form online, submit, and print the confirmation page

4Take the confirmation page, fee receipt, three photos, Aadhaar card and original certificates to your study centre in person; admission stays provisional until they are checked

Eligibility

MA (all seven subjects)
A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university, including by distance. The MA must be finished within four years of admission.
BA (Hons)
10+2 in Arts, Science or Commerce from a recognised board or the National Open School, with English as a compulsory subject. The degree must be finished within five years.

Exams and study

Exam centre and admit card

You choose an examination centre on the application form. Before each exam you must go to your study centre in person to fill in the admit card and attendance card.

Study material

Self-instructional study material prepared by the CDOE is given at admission, at the CDOE or your study centre. It is in English, except for Hindi.

Contact programmes

Each programme has a personal contact programme of about 7 to 15 days. It is compulsory for the MA and optional for the BA.

UGC recognition. UGC-DEB’s 2026-27 list of universities recognised for distance (ODL) programmes includes Rajiv Gandhi University with 12: four-year BA (Hons) in Hindi, History, Political Science, Sociology and Education up to January-February 2030, and MAs in Sociology, Political Science, History, Hindi, Education, English and Economics from August 2026 up to January 2031. It is not on the online lists.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the RGU distance MA?

₹28,150 for two years by our sum of the four semester fees: ₹8,750, ₹5,300, ₹8,800 and ₹5,300. It is the same in all seven subjects.

Does RGU offer an MBA or online courses?

No. UGC-DEB’s 2026-27 lists give it only five BA (Hons) and seven MA distance programmes, and no online programmes.

Can I still apply for 2026-27?

UGC-DEB’s last date for the 2026-27 session was 13 October 2026, and the CDOE has posted no later date. Check the university’s website or call (0360) 2278087.

Where are the exams held?

At the examination centre you pick on the form. You must first fill in your admit card in person at your study centre; all 16 are in Arunachal Pradesh.

Is there an entrance test?

None is mentioned. The MA needs a degree in any subject, and the BA needs 10+2 with English as a compulsory subject.

If RGU IDE isn’t the right fit

RGU’s distance degrees are arts subjects only, and its study centres are all in Arunachal Pradesh. IGNOU admits in January and July, and Gauhati University and KKHSOU in Assam teach by distance. UGC-entitled private online MBAs start at ₹67,000 in total (Mangalayatan University, fee checked 17 October 2026).
